1890 Tour
Kendall Rae Johnson, USDA’s National Urban Agriculture Youth Ambassador, is a remarkable young trailblazer in the world of agriculture. Kendall Rae, in partnership with USDA’s NUag and Virginia State, are embarking on a national tour to provide education and awareness around financial literacy, urban farm practices, and USDA youth loans. The goal is to foster interest and enthusiasm around economic and community development.
Kendall Rae and team will travel to 1890 colleges including Virginia State, South Carolina State, Tennessee State, Prairie View A & M and Fort Valley State, to connect community and inspire youth toward agriculture pathways. The tour will connect university educators, local schools, 4H programs, and local businesses promoting urban collaboration. The group will host farm tours, workshops, interactive games, book readings, and more. This includes Kendall Rae’s book “I’m Growing Places” and youth curriculum “My Farm Biz”.

Kendall Rae Johnson, an inspiring young leader in the agricultural community is excited to embark on this national journey with NUag. Kendall was born and raised in Atlanta, Georgia, and began on her farming journey at the tender age of three, inspired by the wisdom of her great-grandmother, Laura “Kate” Williams. Kendall Rae fondly recalls her great-grandmother’s advice to “put collard greens back in the dirt,” sparking her lifelong fascination with gardening.
Her farming journey began on a small patio porch, where Kendall Rae nurtured seeds and collard green roots into a vibrant garden of cucumbers, peppers, tomatoes, and of course, collard greens. Now, at just nine years old, Kendall Rae holds the prestigious title of Georgia’s youngest certified farmer. Her passion for farming has not only led to the establishment of her own business but also to her recognition as an advocate and spokesperson for youth in agriculture across Georgia and beyond.
In 2021, her story captured the world’s attention, earning her appearances on major platforms like Good Morning America, Ellen DeGeneres, CNN, Nickelodeon News, and Sesame Street. Her inspiring journey has been celebrated by notable figures, including Former First Lady Michelle Obama and Former Vice President Kamala Harris. In recognition of her contributions to urban agriculture, Kendall Rae was honored with a statewide resolution declaring March 23rd, 2023, as “Kendall Rae Johnson Day” in Georgia.
Her influence extends to print media, where she’s been featured in numerous educational magazines, further solidifying her impact on the agricultural community.
Kendall Rae’s story is one of inspiration and aspiration, as she continues to pave the way for future generations through her non-profit organization, Kendall Rae’s Green Heart. This initiative aims to empower youth in agricultural practices, sustainability, entrepreneurship, and career pathways in agriculture.
